In 1992, we use the relationship between household members to create MIGRANTF and MIGRANTM where the parents live in the same household and completed the survey or are the household reference person. These parental migration variables are missing where parents no longer are living, live in other households, or did not participate in the survey.

Comparability — France [top]

In 1985, the data only cover categories of citizenship of diarists who are the reference person or the spouse of the reference person. This is not a complete list. Additionally, we map these variables where the reference person or spouse of the reference person is the parent of another household member.

In 1998, the survey asked all household members where they were born. The variable migrant is complete. Where a diarist lives with one or both of their parents, we can match the parent's place of birth information to migrant and migrant. The place of birth of parents who were no longer living or who lived in other households was not asked.

Comparability — Spain [top]

In 2009, the survey asked whether diarists were born in Spain, born in another European country, or born elsewhere. Most respondents have one citizenship, though a minority have two citizenships. As the migration information is limited, we combine the where born information with the citizenship in other European countries and citizenship of non-European countries. As the variable CITIZEN covers Spanish citizenship, the values of MIGRANTD, MIGRANTM and MIGRANTF cover only where diarists were born and citizenship of European and non-European countries.

Also, users should not that it only is possible to produce values for the place of birth of a diarist's mother and father if the parents live in the same household and also participated in the survey. If the parent lives in another household or lives in the same household but did not participate in the HETUS survey, then the migration information is missing.
