Sample description
Country: Republic of Korea (South Korea)
Study title: 1999 Korean Time Use Survey
Collector: Korean Statistical Institute (KOSTAT)
When conducted: September 1999
Sampling method and study design: Statistics Korea drew a random national sample of households, and asked all household members aged 10 and older to complete two 24 hour time diaries on two consecutive days. The survey collected an oversample of Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Participants filled in their activities in their own words. Diaries covered a calendar day (midnight to midnight) in ten minute intervals. Participants self-completed their main and secondary activities, which then were coded into 144 activity codes. Diaries also included a limited location variable, collecting 8 categories of mode of transport, and whether the diarist was at home or elsewhere.
Sample size: 87346 diaries (42973 respondents)
Response rate: 93.2%
Weighting procedures: The survey includes two weights, one for distribution of households for analysis of household level variables, and a second person-diary level weight (the same for both diaries in some cases, different for each diary in others) that both addresses population imbalances in the sample compared to the national census and evenly distributes days of the week.
