Description

INOUT reports whether an activity took place inside, outside, or in a vehicle. Any activity where there is a vehicle recorded as a mode of transport is coded as 3 (travelling). More detailed information about location is available in ELOC.

The original location codes are used to identify locations that are outside (in the yard of own home, at the beach or countryside, children's play area, and the like). Walking and cycling for transport and most walking and cycling as sport takes place outside.

Comparability

Users should note that the degree of specification about whether an activity in inside or outside is highly variable by survey, and caution should be used with this variable for cross-country and cross-time analysis.

Comparability — Netherlands [top]

The information on the location of activities is restricted to three values: "Own home", "Not at home, but in the same city" and "Not at home, in another city". After exhausting the potential of original location codes, we use information embedded in the activity codes, such as whether the activity was a mode of transport, playing indoors with children, odd jobs outdoors.

Comparability — United States [top]

In the ATUS (2003 forward), original locations are privileged over activities performed. For example, walking in a store or mall would be coded as being done inside even though as noted above most walking takes place outside. The exception is imputed travel (MAIN), which is coded as -8 if it is not a travel location in the source data.
