The location filter (ELOC and MTRAV) allows users to restrict the time use variable currently being created to a particular set of places or modes of transportation. When a location filter is applied, only times spent in the selected locations (given other filter selections) are added together.
The default selection is all locations, meaning that the times spent in each of the selected activities (given other filter selections) are added together regardless of where the activities occurred.
Users should note that the mode of travel (MTRAV) is NOT available in all samples. If a time use variable is created that specifies a mode of travel and all MTRAV values for the diary are all missing, the system will return a 0 value for that respondent. Relevant samples include France 1998, United Kingdom 1995, United States 1965 and 1975.
