Comparability

RUSHED is constructed differently across samples.

Comparability — Canada [top]

In 2005, this variable is coded 0=Never and 2=Often as the original variable is derived from the original variable TCS_Q16: "Do you feel that you're constantly under stress?" and the response options only include: Yes and No.

In 2010, this variable was recoded using feeling rushed variable from the original dataset GTU_Q110.

In 2015, the labels are coded as follows:

0: Never
1: "Less than once a month" and "about once per month"
2: "Few times a week" and "always"

Comparability — France [top]

In 1985, the survey asked the question "how often do you feel too tired to do anything" rather than rushed, and asked this question of only diarists.

Comparability — Italy [top]

In 2002 and 2008, the survey asked respondents if the diarist feels stressed or not, but not if they felt rushed. The "stress" data is considered an analogue to feeling rushed, and is used for this variable.

Comparability — United Kingdom [top]

In 1987, the survey asked respondents and their spouse/partner two time pressure questions. First, "how often do you feel that you have too little time after work (never, almost always, frequently, sometimes, rarely)?" Second, "do you feel you have time on your hands (agree strongly, agree somewhat, no strong feelings, disagree somewhat, disagree strongly)?" For main respondents and spouses/partners, we code too little time after work=never as 0; if too little time after work=sometimes or rarely, RUSHED=1; if too little time after work=almost always or frequent, RUSHED=2; if respondents did not answer this question, RUSHED is coded based on the second question. If the respondent disagree or strongly disagree that he/she has time on his/her hands, RUSHED=2; if the respondent has no strong feelings about whether he/she has time on his/her hands, RUSHED=1; if the respondent agrees or strongly agrees that he/she has time on their hands, RUSHED=0.

Comparability — United States [top]

In 1975, this question was not asked in the first wave, so there is more missing data for respondents who dropped out after the first wave. RUSHED was constructed based on two questions. First, the respondent was asked "Would you say you always feel rushed even to do the things you have to do, only sometimes feel rushed, or almost never feel rushed?" If the respondent did not answer this question, information from a question about having time on their hands was used to construct RUSHED.
