Secondary Activity Filter

Secondary activities occur at the same time as primary activities. Secondary activities are NOT consistently collected (see SEC). By applying secondary activity filters, only time spent during the primary activities in which one or more selected secondary activities also occurred will be aggregated to create a time use variable.

No secondary activity filter is applied unless a user specifically requests one. Therefore, given the default selection, the time spent in the specified activities (given other filter selections) is returned regardless of whether the respondent was engaged in secondary activities.

Users should note that selecting "All" secondary activities includes the selection of primary activities where no secondary activity was collected. Use caution when applying this filter.

Users should also note that secondary activities are NOT available in all samples. If a time use variable is created that specifies a secondary activity and all SEC values for the diary are all missing, the system will return a 0 value for that respondent. Relevant samples include Netherlands 1990, United Kingdom 1995, United States 1993.
