Comparability

OWNHOME is comparable across all samples.

Comparability — Canada [top]

In 2005 and 2010, the original variable only distinguishes between whether a member of the household owns the dwelling or not. In other words, it does not explicitly ask whether the accommodation is rented or whether it should be considered as "other arrangements". Therefore, OWNHOME is for this sample assumes that if the respondent's dwelling is not owned then it must be rented.

Comparability — France [top]

In 1985, the home ownership variable includes a category for living in a family home but not being charged rent. As the wider family can afford to provide this accommodation without payment, we assume this is more likely to be owned rather than rented accommodation. Adding these cases to the own the home category also creates a more consistent cross-time picture in the French time use data. These cases represent less than 3 diarists.
